In Phase I PACU, our ratio is 1 RN per patient. In Phase II PACU our ratio is generally 1 RN to 3-4 patients.
Hours and shifts vary. We staff as early as 6 am and as late as 11 pm. Our full-time and part-time staff is required to take call.
- Call starts at 7 pm and ends at 8 am the next day.
- We staff the weekends and holiday hours with call staff.
- Nurses take call an average of once every other week, 4 weekends a year, and one major holiday and one minor holiday.
Each orientee is assigned to approximately 2 preceptors. One preceptor works with the orientee in Same Day Surgery and the other works with the orientee in the PACU. The orientee works with the preceptors for about 3 months or until orientation is complete. An Education Coordinator also works with the orientee and his or her preceptor to ensure a successful orientation.
During orientation, training includes:
- Airway management is a main focus of our orientation to ensure successful progression into the PACU role.
- We also provide training in computer charting.
Staff Nurses receive ongoing training, to include:
- PALS certification
- Yearly skills updates
- We also offer several educational opportunities throughout the year that pertains directly to the care we provide. Most of the training comes with CEU offerings.
Paid training is available to become a preceptor, improve leadership skills, PALS certification and more!
We hire Graduate Nurses who have a special interest in this type of nursing. We also look for candidates who have had exposure to SDS or PACU nursing. Refer to Orientation and Ongoing Training Opportunities above. If needed, orientation may be extended to meet the needs of the Graduate Nurse.
Advancement from Graduate Nurse to Staff Nurse occurs after completing orientation and passing NCLEX.
