*shared by 5 Sutherland and 5 Henson
We have a “sister” unit -- 5 Henson. 5 Sutherland and 5 Henson share managers and staff; in fact, most of our staff members spend time working on both units.
Our nursing unit is supported by:
- A Child-Life Specialist assigned to our unit
- Respiratory Therapy support 24/7
- Pharmacy support 24/7
- Social Work support 24/7
- Chaplain support 24/7
- Nutrition support
- Rehab Team, which includes physicians, APNs, OT, PT, Speech Therapy, Nutrition, Social Work, Chaplain, and Child Life.
We assign a team of 2 RNs and 1 CA/NT to each pod. Each RN cares for 3-4 patients. The CA/NT in each pod works with both RNs, assisting in the care of up to 7 patients.
Full-time employees on our unit work 3 12-hour shifts each week:
- 7:00 am-7:30 pm
- 7:00 pm-7:30 am
We also have part-time, PRN, and Weekend Option positions.
We have a Charge Nurse on each shift, who typically is not assigned a patient load. Our Charge Nurses are involved with managing the day-to-day operations of our unit.
We generally have a “resource nurse” available Monday through Friday to assist others with procedures, transports, admissions, etc. The Resource Nurse does not usually take a patient assignment unless acuity is very high on the unit.
Orientees train one-on-one with an assigned preceptor throughout the orientation process. RN Orientation is typically 10 weeks, but may be increased or decreased, as needed by the orientee. Orientation includes both 5 Sutherland and 5 Henson.
During the orientation period, all competencies are verified, there are routine meetings with the Unit-Based Education Coordinator to discuss progress, and the orientee provides direct patient care starting with one patient and gradually learning to coordinate care for a full patient load.
Staff Nurses receive ongoing training, to include:
- Rehab 101
- Spinal Fusion
- Dialysis and Renal Transplant
- Quarterly staff updates
- Annual competencies
- Floor-specific training
Paid training is available to become a preceptor, improve leadership skills, attain PALS certification, and more!
We hire Graduate Nurses. Graduate Nurses work with a preceptor for 10 weeks before working independently.
- Weeks 1 through 8 are the main part of orientation, including 4 weeks on 5 Sutherland and 4 weeks on 5 Henson.
- Weeks 9 and 10 are worked on the opposite shift, utilizing the preceptor as a resource only.
Advancement from Graduate Nurse to Staff Nurse occurs after completing orientation, most competencies, and passing NCLEX.
